What we do here

Three things, done properly

We are not a general handyman service. These are the jobs we take, and each one is run by the same licensed contractor from the walkthrough to the final sign-off.

Kitchen remodeling

Cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting, plumbing and electrical under one contract and one licence.

Bathroom remodeling

Full bathroom rebuilds, including the waterproofing details that decide whether a shower lasts five years or twenty-five.

Water damage repair

A failed supply line or a slow leak behind a wall — dried, opened up, and put back properly.

Permits

Permits in Hercules work differently

Most cities around here run their own building counter. Hercules does not — building permits go through the county building official. It is a small administrative difference that causes a surprising amount of confusion, because the instinct is to ring City Hall and ask for the building department.

The practical line is the same as everywhere else in California. Under the 2022 California Residential Code, finish work — painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets and countertops — is generally exempt. A permit is required the moment the work moves plumbing, adds or relocates electrical circuits, or changes structure.

Where it gets less obvious is that the city itself asks residents to call before starting a cabinet job, a remodel or an addition, because plenty of jobs that start as a cabinet swap quietly become something that needs a permit once a circuit moves or a wall opens up.

We handle the application and the building-department sign-offs as part of the job. We also close the permit out. An open permit is the kind of thing nobody notices until the house is being sold, and then it is urgent and expensive.

Straight answer

How much work have we done in Hercules?

Less than we intend to. Excove is a young company and most of what we have completed so far has been in Rodeo, a few minutes north — you can see one of those jobs on our projects page, photographed before and after.

We would rather tell you that than pad this page with stock photographs and vague claims about homes we have never been inside. What we can offer is a licence you can check, an estimate with line items you can read, and a contractor who lives close enough that coming back is not an imposition.

Common questions

Remodeling in Hercules — questions we get

Who issues building permits in Hercules?

Hercules routes building permits through the county building official rather than running its own permit counter the way neighbouring cities do. That catches people out, because the obvious move — calling City Hall expecting a building department — is not quite how it works. We handle the application and the building-department sign-offs either way; it is part of the job, not an extra.

Does a kitchen or bathroom remodel in Hercules need a permit?

It depends on what the job actually touches. Under the 2022 California Residential Code, finish work — painting, tiling, carpeting, cabinets and countertops — is generally exempt. The moment the work moves plumbing, adds or relocates electrical circuits, or changes structure, a permit is required. The City of Hercules specifically asks people to call the Building Inspection Division before starting a cabinet job, a remodel or an addition, because the line between the two is narrower than it looks. We tell you which side of it your job falls on at the walkthrough.

Does every permit get inspected?

Yes. Hercules states plainly that every permit requires a building inspection. That is the city inspector, not us. Our part is making sure the work is ready for them and that the sign-offs actually get closed out — an open permit is a problem that surfaces years later, usually when the house is being sold.

You are based in Rodeo. Does that matter?

Only in your favour. Hercules is the next town along, a few minutes down San Pablo Avenue. It means short drives, no travel charges buried in the estimate, and a contractor who is close enough to come back if something needs attention after the job is done.

Are you licensed?

Yes — California CSLB #1123274, a Class B general building contractor licence, with insurance in force. You can check the licence yourself on the CSLB website; we would rather you did.
