Accessibility

We want this site to work for everyone who needs a contractor, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard, or a phone held at arm's length in bad light.

What we aim for

We build to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are not claiming to have achieved it in full — nobody who has not tested with real assistive technology can honestly claim that, and a promise we cannot stand behind is worth less than an accurate description.

What is checked automatically, on every build

These are not aspirations. An automated check runs against every page of this site at phone and desktop width before it can be published, and the build is treated as failed if any of them break:

  • Text contrast of at least 4.5:1 against its background, everywhere on every page.
  • Tap targets of at least 44×44 pixels for buttons and standalone links, with the exception WCAG allows for links inside a sentence.
  • No horizontal scrolling at phone width.
  • Every form field has a label tied to it, and errors are announced rather than only shown in colour.
  • No JavaScript errors in the console, which are a common cause of controls that silently stop working.

What is not checked yet

Being straight about the gaps is the point of this page:

  • Screen reader testing with JAWS, NVDA or VoiceOver. Nobody has run one against this site.
  • Keyboard-only navigation end to end. Focus styles exist, but the full path has not been walked.
  • Whether image descriptions are useful rather than merely present — a machine can see that alt text exists, not whether it says anything.

Known limitations

This site has very few photographs, which is a content gap rather than an accessibility one — but it means there is little image description to get wrong. If we add a gallery, every image gets a real description written by a person, not a filename.

If something does not work for you

Tell us and we will fix it. This is a small company, so the message reaches the person who can actually change the page.

Call us on (510) 407-3343, or send an email to excovebuilders@gmail.com describing what happened. It helps if you can say which page, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse — but tell us anyway even if you would rather not go into detail.

You do not need this website to hire us. If the site is in your way, call and we will take the whole enquiry over the phone. That has always been available and always will be.

Response

We aim to reply within two business days and to fix anything that blocks someone from contacting us as a priority over everything else on the site.
